Rivers Loses Another Commissioner: Gift Worlu Resigns

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – May 15, 2024

The Rivers State government is facing another cabinet shakeup after Commissioner for Housing, Gift Worlu, tendered his resignation. This comes just weeks after nine commissioners resigned in January amidst a political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The reason for Worlu’s departure remains unclear. A letter addressed to the governor, obtained by local media, cites “personal reasons that require immediate attention” as the reason for his resignation.

Governor Fubara has yet to comment publicly on Worlu’s resignation. It’s also unclear if the position will be refilled immediately.

This latest development adds to a period of political instability in Rivers State. The January mass resignations were followed by a controversial peace deal brokered by President Tinubu that saw most of the resigned commissioners reinstated.

Whether Worlu’s resignation is connected to these prior events remains to be seen. However, it raises questions about the stability of Governor Fubara’s administration
