Police condemns provocation against officers performing their lawful duty after a man confronted an officer in a viral video
The Nigeria Police Force has condemned provocation against its officers in the cause of carrying out their lawful duties.
The police released a statement in reaction to a viral video of a civilian confronting a police officer in Lagos and accusing him of operating an illegal check point.
The NPF shared the video and wrote: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns this act of provocation against officers performing their lawful duty. Such disturbances are unacceptable as they are capable of undermining public safety. We urge citizens to respect security personnel and desist from any actions that obstruct their work.”
The video in question shows a uniformed police officer being confronted by a civilian in a car.
“But you know this is an illegal check point, right? You know this is University of Lagos Road, I’m very very right,” the civilian said to the police at the start of the video.
The officer told the man, “Oga, you cannot tell us our work. Go, go to where you’re going.”
The man replied: “I have your name, I have your badge. You know you could lose your job, right?”
“You can send our picture to IG,” the police officer replied. “Listen, I come here in open cloth and everything, you can take it [picture] and send to IG”.
The civilian asked the officer why he’s checking cars and he replied, “I’m checking because I’m authorised to check.”
However, the man kept insisting that “this is an illegal checkpoint”.
The officer warned the man, saying “You may enter trouble for what you’re doing.”
But the man insisted, “I will not enter trouble. This is an illegal checkpoint.”
The man then asked the officer to “show me your warrant, show me your ID card.”
The officer responded, “If I want to show ID card, it’s not to someone like you. You don’t know what youre saying.”
“You don’t know your job,” the civilian responded. “You know you don’t know your job, right?”
